Fasteners are another segment of the hardware category carriage bolts come with various platings such as shiny zinc for regular use or galvanized for exterior use the old black iron is not very common anymore.They common thicknesses from 1/4" to 1/2" and possibly thicker.Common lengths are up to 6" however longer lengths are available.Gr2 and Gr5 bolts are available with the shiny zinc finish or galvanized and are made in thicknesses from 1/4" up to 1" or thicker and common lengths are from 1/2" to 6" however longer lengths are available.There is also another grade of bolt the Gr8 bolt which is stronger than the Gr2 and Gr5 for applications where you need a stronger bolt these bolts come in the same thicknesses and lengths as the other grades of bolts.There are also metric bolts in different thicknesses and lengths.Also available is all thread rods in 3' and 6" lengths in Gr2 and Gr5 in thicknesses from 3/16" to 1" or thicker.Then there are cap screws and shear pins.Another type of fastener is the machine screw which comes in 4/32,6/32,8/32,10/32,12/32 these are fine thread fasteners they are made in flat head/countersunk head or round head with Square or slot or Phillips recesses to drive them and come in lengths from 1/2"- 4" or possibly longer depending on the thickness.The thicker the bolts are the longer the lengths available.Machine screws are also available in metric sizes with the same head types as the standard machine screws.Wood screws are available in thicknesses from #2 to #14 and lengths from 1/4" to 6" depending on the thickness, thicker screws are available in longer lengths.woodscrews heads are either flat/countersunk or round, to drive the screws they either have a slot or a square or a Phillips recess in the head. Sheet metal screws and self-tapping screws are very similar and are generally used to fasten sheet metal together they are manufactured in most of the same sizes as the wood screws with a flat head and pan head and oval head being the popular head types with the same driver recesses in the heads as the other types of screws. Sheet metal screws can be used in place of wood screws however wood screws can not be used to replace sheet metal screws as they will not make their own thread in sheet metal. Self-drilling and tapping screws are manufactured with various types of heads such as flat head square drive or pan head Phillips or truss head Phillips or square drive. Self-drilling and taping screws are made in different thicknesses such as 10/32,10/24,12/32,12/24 and 1/4"/28 in various lengths up to 4" or longer. one application for Self-drilling and tapping screws is to fasten decking material to the metal frame of a trailer. These fasteners will drill through the wood decking and into the metal frame and thread the hole in the metal frame. Self-drilling and tapping screws can also be used to fasten metal to metal.
